When your AC needs a significant repair, the big question is whether to fix it or replace it. Here's the honest framework we walk our neighbors through — no pressure either way.
The "50% rule"
A common guideline: if a repair costs more than about half the price of a new system, and your unit is older, replacement usually makes more sense. A $200 capacitor on a 6-year-old AC? Fix it. A $2,000 compressor on a 14-year-old unit? Replacement is likely smarter.
Consider the age
Most central AC units last 12–15 years in our climate. Past that, parts get harder to find and efficiency drops. If yours is in that range and acting up, start budgeting for a replacement.
Signs it's time to replace
- It uses the old R-22 refrigerant (phased out and expensive to recharge — see our refrigerant guide)
- Repairs are becoming a yearly habit
- Energy bills keep climbing every summer
- Some rooms never get comfortable
- The compressor has failed
When repair is the right call
If your unit is under ~10 years old, the repair is minor, and it's been well maintained, fixing it is almost always the better value. A single capacitor or fan motor doesn't mean you need a whole new system — beware anyone who says otherwise.
The upside of replacing
A new high-efficiency system can noticeably cut your summer bills, cool more evenly, and run quieter — plus a fresh warranty. We cover what to expect in our guide to AC installation in Palatine, and we offer financing to make it manageable.
