There are few things more frustrating than an air conditioner that runs all day but never actually cools your home — especially during a humid northwest-suburb summer. The good news: most "AC not cooling" problems come down to a handful of common causes. Here are the eight we see most often.

1. A dirty or clogged air filter

This is the #1 cause, and the easiest to fix. A clogged filter chokes airflow, so your system can't move cool air through the house. Check your filter — if it looks gray and dusty, replace it. Do this every 1–3 months.

2. A tripped breaker or thermostat setting

Make sure the thermostat is set to COOL and a few degrees below room temperature. Then check your electrical panel — the outdoor unit and indoor blower are often on separate breakers, and one can trip without the other.

3. A frozen evaporator coil

If you see ice on the refrigerant lines or indoor unit, your coil is frozen — usually from restricted airflow or low refrigerant. Turn the system off and let it thaw, then run just the fan. If it freezes again, you need a technician.

4. Low refrigerant (a leak)

Refrigerant doesn't get "used up" — if it's low, you have a leak. Warm air from the vents and hissing sounds are common signs. This isn't a DIY fix; refrigerant handling requires EPA-certified technicians.

5. A dirty outdoor condenser unit

Your outdoor unit releases heat — if it's caked in grass, leaves, and dirt, it can't. Gently rinse it with a hose (power off first) and keep at least two feet of clearance around it.

6. A failing capacitor or compressor

The capacitor starts your compressor and fan motors. When it fails, the unit may hum but not start, or the fan won't spin. Compressor problems are more serious. Both need a professional diagnosis.

7. Leaky or blocked ductwork

If cool air is escaping into your attic through leaky ducts — or vents are blocked by furniture — rooms won't cool evenly. Duct issues are a common hidden cause of poor cooling.

8. An aging or undersized system

If your AC is 12–15+ years old, struggles every summer, and your bills keep climbing, it may simply be at the end of its life. We can help you weigh repair vs. replacement honestly.
